Whatever Could This Mean?

On the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2, the crowd's reaction to this amazing event was, "Whatever could this mean?" (Acts 2:12) Today, after more than 2,000 years since that time people are still asking that question. Pentecost is one of the most significant events in both the Old and New Testaments. It is not just a historical moment but a life-changing experience for believers today. I believe if we are to explore this subject, we should ask ourselves:

What did Pentecost mean in the Old Testament and what was its significance?

How was Pentecost fulfilled in the New Testament through the Holy Spirit?

Does Pentecost matter for us today?

The Old Testament Foreshadowing of Pentecost

The Exodus of Israel from Egypt occurred during the Feast of Passover, in the first month (Nisan). Fifty days later, they arrived at Mount Sinai, where they received the law. This is where Pentecost originated in the Old Testament.

This day was known as:

  • The Feast of Harvest

  • The Feast of Weeks

  • The Day of Firstfruits

  • The Feast of Pentecost (Greek for "fifty")

On this first Pentecost:

  • God gave the Law to Moses.

  • The nation of Israel was established.

  • 3,000 people were slain for idolatry (Exodus 32:28).

The Fulfillment of Pentecost in the New Testament

Jesus fulfilled the first four feasts of Israel in His first coming: Passover (His crucifixion), Unleavened Bread, Firstfruits, and Pentecost.

  • Jesus was crucified on Passover.

  • He rose on the Feast of Firstfruits.

  • Pentecost came 50 days later, after Christ’s resurrection.

Key Connections Between Sinai & Pentecost:

  • At Sinai, God wrote the Law on stone tablets. In Acts 2, He wrote it on believers’ hearts (2 Corinthians 3:3).

  • At Sinai, 3,000 perished. At Pentecost, 3,000 were saved.

  • The Law brought condemnation. The Spirit brought life (Romans 8:1-2).

The Purpose of Pentecost for Believers Today

Pentecost Empowers Us to Live in the Fullness of Christ

Romans 8 describes the Spirit-filled life:

  • No condemnation for those in Christ (Romans 8:1).

  • Freedom from sin and death (Romans 8:2).

  • Being spiritually minded leads to life and peace (Romans 8:6).

Pentecost Empowers Us to Be Witnesses

Acts 1:8 – “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

The disciples were hiding in fear before Pentecost, but after receiving the Holy Spirit, they boldly preached the gospel, and thousands were saved.

Pentecost is the Latter Rain for a Harvest of Souls

Hosea 6:3 – “He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.”

The outpouring of the Holy Spirit is the latter rain, preparing the world for a great end-time harvest before Christ’s return

Are You Walking in Pentecost?

Pentecost is not just a one-time event—it is a daily experience of:

  • Living in the Spirit.

  • Walking in power and boldness.

  • Reaching souls for the Kingdom.

Are you walking in the fullness of Pentecost? If not, ask the Holy Spirit to fill you today!
